WISCONSIN NUTRITION
EDUCATION PROGRAM (WNEP)
The Wisconsin Nutrition
Education Program is a USDA federally funded grant program. WNEP
provides educational programming on diet quality, food safety,
food security, and physical fitness to low-income youth and adults
in Douglas County. WNEP works with community partners
to promote nutrition in Douglas County. WNEP also participates
in the Douglas County Nutrition Coalition and the Family Services
Advisory Board.
YOUTH EDUCATION
The Douglas County Nutrition Education youth programs include lessons about the Food Guide Pyramid, food safety, and ways to increase physical activity. Douglas County WNEP does programs in classrooms at Northern Lights, Lake Superior, Bryant, Cooper and Solon Springs Elementary Schools.
ADULT AND FAMILY EDUCATION
WNEP works with various community agencies on topics of healthy eating, being physically active, managing resources on a limited income and food safety.
- Cooking and nutrition classes are held at the Harbor House shelter, and the Northwest WI Community Service Agency transitional housing program.
- Nutrition and Physical activity topics are taught at the WIC Program, Douglas County Health and Human Services (Women Wellness and Health Checks), Family Resource Center, CASDA, and Health Care Clinic..
- Fun Family Cooking classes (a series of 4 classes on nutrition and resource management topics) are provided throughout the school year to Head Start families.
- The Douglas County Senior meal sites receive information on various nutrition, food safety and physical activity topics. A bimonthly newsletter is available to seniors visiting meal sites and to seniors receiving home-delivered meals.
FOOD SECURITY AND HUNGER
Douglas County WNEP program supports the Poverty Simulations provided to the community to better understand the culture of poverty. For more information call (715) 395-1363 - Linda Bruce.
